My Students
"Mrs. Q! I read that by myself!", the best words to hear out of any child in my special education classroom.
I chose these items because they are fun ways to reinforce skills that children are currently learning.
These tools will give them independence to practice on their own and keep them engaged in fun and exciting lessons.
The students in my classroom are students with autism, learning and emotional disabilities. Teaching them to read is paramount in having them succeed in school.
My class serves students with a range of disabilities, including intellectual disabilities, emotional disturbance, autism spectrum disorder and specific learning disabilities. The typical student in my class reads at a pre-kindergarten grade level and many struggle with basic phonics and number sense. My department budget is $200 a year for my students. This budget is spent on basic classroom needs leaving no left over for curriculum that make learning to read exciting. The materials we are provided with are left overs from general education. As a special education teacher for the past 30 years I find giving a student the gift of reading impacts them in a positive way
My Project
The materials I am requesting such as Tower of Sight-Words Games - Complete Set provide a game type activity while teaching valuable reading skills. My students can invite same age peers in to play with them helping them to build relationships outside of our classroom.
Students will have opportunities to have fun while mastering skills that will stay with them for a lifetime.
The Sight-Word Steps will provide a path to walk in the room reinforcing words practiced in groups. The word work folders have a high interest so my students can feel proud of the work they are doing.
The Power Pens will provide independent practice opportunities to reinforce their basic multiplication skills.
The Phonics Activity station provide older identified special ed students to feel successful in their reading while building necessary skills.
