My students need rain gear and umbrellas to protect their clothing from the torrid rains we experience in the South Florida area, socks to protect their feet from the cold and blisters, and take home snacks.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Our students face great challenges outside of the classroom. We create a safe, fun, and empowering classroom for our students to thrive in all areas of their life. Our school is located in the inner city with underprivileged families striving for a better life. Single parents, grandparents, and older siblings continue to do their very best to instill a better way of living for their families.
We are 95% African-American, 2% Haitian-American, 2% Hispanic and 1% Caucasian with 97% of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch.
We are a Title I school with great potential. I love my students and spend most of my out-of-the-classroom time developing projects to enhance their learning and wellbeing.
My Project
The majority of my students DO NOT own an umbrella let alone proper rain gear to protect them from the rain. Most improvise by using garbage bags or they just simply get wet! They come to class soaked and have to get a change of clothing or most have to stay wet during the duration of class.
Due to our tropical weather, my students experience days of torrential downpours occurring while coming to school and during dismissal!
Parents lack the resource to provide ample rain protection for their child. Pink ponchos for the girls and red rain coats which resemble a fireman's protective wear for the boys. The majority of the time an umbrella will NOT suffice when picking up more than one child, therefore pink umbrellas with ruffles for the girls and umbrellas with fire and fire truck print for the boys insuring each child will have an individual umbrella to keep him protected.
In addition to the rain gear, my students will benefit from socks which will keep their toes warm and toasty, as well as not being embarrassed with holes in their socks when we count our fingers and toes.
My students will also benefit with snacks - they love Pepperidge Farm Goldfish, Anderson Peanut Butter Filled Pretzels, Healthy Snacks Box, Party Snack Box, and Austin Zoo Animal Crackers -which will be distributed as a take home snack. The meals experienced by the majority of my students are while they are at school. For some our breakfasts and lunches are the only meals they'll receive that day!
