My Students
My students are inquisitive, creative, and compassionate. They thrive on social interactions and hands-on activities that promote productive struggle. Our school is located in a predominantly rural, low-income neighborhood with a considerable portion of the children being of native Hawaiian and/or Pacific Island ancestry. Even with the financial challenges impacting their lives, my students want to come to school and are excited to learn. They possess invincible grit when tackling new projects. They truly light up my life!
COVID-19 has devastated our school community.
Normally, I am able to accept twenty students. This year, I am limited to only ten, due to distancing issues. I had been teaching virtually, but began face-to-face instruction on November 30th. There are many new procedures and protocols which need to be followed. Although things will be way out of the norm, I am determined to make the "new normal" an incredible learning experience for my precious students!
My Project
Water play is always fun, but did you know how much students can learn from investigating water through play? Water play develops eye-hand coordination through actions like pouring, squirting, scrubbing, stirring, and squeezing. It provides sensory experiences as it helps them discover textures and temperatures. Adding sand or other sensory materials can magnify their experiences!
Water (and sensory) play promotes discovery through play and it will begin in my class with this requested table.
My students will improve their problem-solving skills as they make observations about how objects float or sink and then making connections to how and why things happen. My students will learn to use their imagination which develops creative thinking which plays an important role in problem-solving.
Water play will also promote my students' language development through rich discussion about what the they are doing. These discussions promote learning new vocabulary like wet, damp, drench, dry, flow, drain, depth, pour, drizzle, and many more. Water play will increase my students' social emotional growth. It will improve their ability to focus on an activity which helps them unwind. It will also encourage social skills like cooperation and sharing. They will learn to work with one or several children, to take turns, and share the space with their friends. These motor, problem solving, language, and social skills are the precursors to financial literacy. Help my students splish splash into water play discoveries with a water/sand table!
