Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students come from different socioeconomic backgrounds, cultures and countries. They range from general education, special education and ESL students who are just learning the English language. My students have some of the most beautiful souls and often help fellow classmates that are struggling.
I believe that every one of my students has purpose in my classroom.
As their teacher I always try to find a way to boost my students' self esteem, practice what it means to truly love yourself, be accepting of others and find a love for Science.
My Project
Every year I have wonderful students that enter my classroom from around the world, specifically Spanish speaking countries. As the year progresses they are learning fundamental English which is a daunting task in itself, but are also learning content specific vocabulary as well.
I believe having materials and books in their native language will make the learning and vocabulary more accessible for my students.
When my ELL students search my book stacks they find numerous books both Science related and "what's popular"/non-fiction in English. I watch as their eyes widen and they get excited over the ONE 4th grade, non-fiction book on my shelf. This brings me joy, but also disappointment.
I want all of my students to feel welcomed and like they have a place in my classroom. By including materials like posters and books in Spanish, I feel like my ELL students will feel even more comfortable in my classroom and have some of the same accessibility as my other students.
