Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I would like to create an experience that is special and relevant to my Pre-K students by helping them grow a garden of cilantro, tomatoes, onions, and peppers; in September, they will use their "crops" as ingredients to make salsa for Hispanic Heritage Month. I am requesting two raised beds to house the vegetables and a compost bin to reduce our food waste and make sure their plants stay strong. Students will be responsible for planting, watering, and measuring the growth of our plants. At the time of harvest, students and parent volunteers will work together to make some tasty salsa!

This culinary garden will benefit students by teaching them to appreciate how their food is grown as well as providing them with a fun, hands-on and culturally relevant activity to continually develop our home-school connection.

We are also studying the parts of and growth of plants, so this project will reinforce the science skills that they are developing in our classroom.

The wonderful thing about four-year-olds is that they are never afraid to get a little messy! Digging in the dirt and tending to our gardens will help them grow academically, relieve them when they feel stressed, and give them something delicious to eat when the time is right.
