President Obama was quoted as saying, “Don't just play on your phone, program it.” Through this project, my students will learn to code, an academic language which will be as important as reading and arithmetic in the very near future.
I teach a super group of fifth graders.
My students are excited to come to school each day and to learn from each other. They use their critical thinking skills to ask good questions and analyze information. They are creative and become excited any time we can incorporate technology and the arts into our lessons. My students collaborate with each other to create final products that demonstrate their learning.
My Project
I'm requesting 6 SPRK Sphero robots for our classroom. With Sphero, my students will begin a journey down a road of 21st century learning where computer science is key. By incorporating Sphero into our classroom, my students will be introduced to the language of coding & learn the basics of programming, a critical skill for their futures. They'll be able to integrate their love of technology with their love of exploring new ideas as they learn how to control and use Sphero in the classroom. My students will integrate Sphero across the curriculum. In Math he'll navigate a path of integers. In art, he'll dance to a favorite song. In Science he'll mimic a planet’s orbit of the sun by traveling at different rates. In engineering, he'll complete a race course designed by students. Sphero will help students make meaningful connections to our curriculum and the lessons they create with Sphero will help build a foundation for future computer science endeavors.
We need to get kids interested in coding now, & Sphero will have my students hooked!
Adding a robotics program to our classroom will infuse our STEM curriculum with engaging, cross-curricular experiences. It will also connect the dots between science, technology, engineering and math for my students into real life applications. My students will be challenged to think creatively, try new things, learn from their failures, and persevere when unsure. I can't wait to get this program rollin'!
