Sphero and Coding in Our Classroom

My students need 3 SPRK Sphero robots to help them learn the language of coding.

My Students

President Obama was quoted as saying, "Don't just play on your phone, program it." Through this project, my students will learn how to program their phone and more as they learn the language of coding with their new friend Sphero.

I teach a super group of fifth graders.

My students are excited to come to school each day and to learn from each other. They use their critical thinking skills to ask good questions and analyze information. They are creative and become excited any time we can incorporate technology and the arts into our lessons. My students collaborate with each other to create final products that demonstrate their learning.

My Project

I'm requesting 3 SPRK Sphero robots for our classroom. With Sphero, my students will begin a journey down a road of 21st century learning where computer science is key. My students will be able to answer President Obama's call as they integrate their love of technology with their love of exploring new ideas as they learn how to control and use Sphero in the classroom. Using program will introduce my students to the basics of programming, a critical skill for their futures. I will be able access the SPRK program's online lessons so that I can use Sphero in all areas of our curriculum. An example of this the engineering challenge where students design a chariot for Sphero to drive and then have him navigate a student created race course. Through out this process, students will need to ask questions, imagine the possibilities, make a plan, create a product, and then make adjustments to improve when necessary. What great skills for 21st century learning!

We need to get kids interested in coding now, and Sphero will definitely have my students hooked.

Through this project, my students will see that there are careers out there that can change our lives for the better. They will learn the importance of collaboration, improve their communication skills, apply their critical thinking skills and creativity as they work to create something new, and develop a stronger sense of community. I am hopeful that I can bring these experiences to my students.
