My students need a vernier dynamics system with accompanying accessories to help them learn concepts in physics. Physics is hard but that doesn't mean it can't be fun!
From the Big Bang Theory-Sheldon: Given the reaction to my costume, this party is a scathing indictment of the American educational system. Kurt: You're a zebra, right? Sheldon:(to Leonard)Yet another child left behind. I never want a student to be left behind. A hands-on approach is key in science.
My student come from a background with a very rich culture.
Almost 100% of my students are Yup'ik Eskimos. Their culture is full of storytelling. They have learned from those around them their whole lives by listening and then doing. Now my students would like to test that knowledge. My students live in their own world. We are not connected to places by roads, everything that goes in or out comes by a plane or barge. This means that they don't always get to experience things most kids their age get to experience. I want my students to be able to compete with other students when it is time for them to decide on a career, and their only chance is what happens at school.
My Project
Physics is such a hard class by itself, and it is even harder without being able to test things on your own. I want to give my students materials where they can learn by doing, instead of just reading about it, or watching a video. Materials that would help my students include the vernier dynamics systems and other accessories, like the friction cart, photogate, and motion detector. The students I teach don't always have a lot because it is hard to get materials to use in class out in bush Alaska. This means that in school they don't always have access to the same materials someone on the road system might have. The specific materials I am requesting would help my students to learn about motion, acceleration, friction, and much more. This would just be the start of sparking my students interest and helping them to see how much fun science can be.
By having access to these types of technology materials my students will be better able to compete in this age of technology.
These materials specifically will help them to better understand physics concepts, therefore they will be better prepared to schooling after high school. Most colleges require lab work with any science class, and by being exposed to these types of technology students will be better prepared to succeed in post secondary science classes.
