Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach P.E. to elementary students in the heart of the Rocky Mountains. More than 80% of our school's students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch at our Title I school. The majority of our school time and funds are dedicated to academics.

But when it's time for PE, our sixth graders are ready to let loose and play all kinds of active games.

Unlike computer games, P.E. is live-action with hands-on experience as students' feet race to catch, throw, kick, trap, and dribble.

My Project

Cup speed stacking is the perfect activity during a pandemic because each speed stack set is used by one student and then sanitized in between use. Cup stacking is also a fun and intense game that forces a student to cross the midline with their hands as well as their eyes, which engages the right and left hemispheres of the brain needed for higher learning concepts. It also improves the essential physical skill of hand-eye coordination and increases a student's reaction time.

Because students must follow a complex set of rules and play in pairs, speed cup stacking fills these Utah Core State Standards for Physical Education: 1.4.6 Follow directions for safe participation and proper use of equipment without teacher reminders.

2.4.2 Work collaboratively in pairs and small groups. 3.5.3 Discuss the challenge that comes from learning a new physical activity.

The badminton nets will be used for balloon volleyball in my P.E. class. Not only does it keep students physically active but balloons can be easily sanitized in between use to keep students safe and healthy. The nets will be used to teach these Utah Core State Standards for Physical Education: K.1.15 Strike a lightweight object with a short-handled implement. 2.1.15 While using a short-handled implement, strike an object upward with

consecutive hits.

The orange cones will be used to keep students safe by helping them smoothly transition from one activity to another and keep them socially distanced.
