This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
The students in my urban third grade classroom this school year represent a very diverse population, many speak English as a second or third language. Breakfast and lunch are provided free to all students every day. The students are an incredible group of young people who are working hard to make a positive difference not only in their own futures but the future of our community as well.
Their experiences and expertise that they bring to the classroom sparks conversations far beyond that of the teacher centered classroom.
They have amazing strengths and lift each other higher through their strong character education traits. Sharing their authentic work through the use of a document camera will merge the use of technology with the personalization of their handwritten artifacts allowing for even more powerful connections.
My Project
Fluency in math is more than just memorizing facts. It is not just speed and accuracy with number facts on a timed assessment. It takes flexibility in thinking about numbers and how they relate and work together in order to build true speed with accuracy. Through the hands2mind fluency kits, students will have a daily opportunity to work with numbers and number strings to build this flexibility, speed, and accuracy as a whole.
It's amazing to see children make connections with mathematical thinking.
Being able to explain how they think about the number relationships in all of the different ways that they can is true fluency. It takes time and many experiences working flexibly with number strings before long term connections can be made.
