Speech Therapy Is Not Just Fun and Games

My Project

I'm a speech-language pathologist in a Title I School with students who have speech and language delays. Children learn the best while they’re having fun! That’s one reason why motivational games are an essential part of speech and language therapy. However, there are so many more reasons I use games with my students who have speech-language disabilities.

Motivational games not only serve the purpose of positive reinforcement; they help me target social and pragmatic skills, like taking- turns, patience, and remaining on topic.

These skills occur naturally as the children are answering questions to work on comprehension, practicing speech sounds, and using strategies to help stuttering. They aren’t even aware that they are practicing social skills while being reinforced during speech therapy. It’s all fun and games for them! With games, I can create lessons to target IEP goals such as articulation, following directions, using complete sentences, and describing words.
