Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I treat approximately 40 preschool-aged students who are diagnosed with autism, speech and language impairments, and other Co-morbid disorders. As I enter my second year as newly graduated speech therapist, I am seeking support to ensure that my students receive the highest-quality services they deserve through a Distance Learning platform.

My kiddos are energetic, curious, love to learn, laugh, play, and sing.

Last year, they showed their strengths in being flexible to this new style of teaching as I interacted with them through tele-therapy. Many of them benefit from visual supports, modified books/curriculum, and motivating toys. They also come from a diverse cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds, which has unfortunately made it challenging for some families to obtain the resources/services that their more affluent neighborhoods easily receive.

My Project

These toys I am requesting for my project will be useful to have for both teletherapy and if/when I return to see students in-person as well.

My preschoolers love to learn during play-based activities.

These toys will allow them to communicate their wants and needs during fun, functional activities!

The animal hospital toy set is one that my students love to play with as they work on requesting "open", "close", or "keys". They can also label the animals and work on their pretend play skills as we all pretend to be Veterinarians! The wooden train set, while more applicable for in-person therapy, will be used during teletherapy to help with articulation as we use the magnetic trains to link multisyllabic words together (e.g., "bu-tter-fly"). Building blocks are toys that many children have at home. Having a set for myself to use at home and prompting the students to show me their own blocks will allow us to work on stacking blocks together - even from a distance. Finally, to attract/maintain my students' attention, I plan to use stickers to place on my face and also send stickers home so they can do the same activity, too. A tally counter is also helpful when working on articulation drills so they're is a visual for how many times the student has said the word; this is specifically helpful for my students with Childhood Apraxia of Speech.

I am very excited to be requesting these toys for my students and know that with your support, my speech sessions will be fun, educational, and engaging for my students!
