I serve students in kindergarten through 6th grade with a variety of communication disorders. I work with students with articulation disorders, receptive and expressive language delays, social communication and fluency disorders.
Additionally, the majority of my students come from low socioeconomic backgrounds and many lack the exposure to vocabulary and literacy enrichment.
I strive to make my therapy room a nurturing space where students feel safe, respect each other's differences, and help each other to better access the general curriculum.
My Project
This isn't just a lemonade stand. It's a farmer's market, a bakery, a school supplies store. It's a pumpkin stand in the fall and a Christmas tree farm in the winter.
This dramatic play corner will infuse my speech therapy sessions with real-world examples.
We will target seasonal and thematic vocabulary by sorting into categories, describing what we want to purchase, and comparing/contrasting. We will assume roles of customer and clerk to work on social language. We will use the cash register to work on life skills.
One of my most-loved therapy themes is pizza week, when I transform the speech therapy room into a pizzeria. My students look forward to it every year. I am looking to expand upon this by incorporating dramatic play into speech therapy year-round. Thank you for helping my students to use their imagination.
