Speech Reading Power

My Students

My students say, "What are we doing today? Can we play a game?" You play a game one time with your students and they always want games. So I have to think of ways to make my students think they are playing a game all of the time. I try to make my learning as fun as it can be. This means teaching with hands-on materials.

I work with ages 4-12 as a speech therapist.

So all my kids have some sort of speech or language need. The needs can range from just some difficulties with some speech sounds to autism to a severe learning disability. All my students are different which makes teaching both exciting and a challenge. I see my students one to three times a week depending on their mandates. My students have all different backgrounds and learning needs. Hands-on learning helps children learn through having fun. They tend to remember more when there are hands-on activities.

My Project

What does a speech therapist do exactly one may ask? We not only work with how someone speaks but we help with the language component as it relates to speech. This includes reading support. We work with children who need support with phonemic awareness.

So all the items I am requesting are for phonemic awareness support.

Many of the items have a similar theme of focusing on 3-4 letter words, vowels, blends, digraphs, etc. They take areas of reading and focus in on what the specific child needs. For example, using the Stack and Build Phonic Flip Book, you build the words that are shown in the picture. There are different levels and it follows patterns. The kids can work on different levels at the same time in a group, and they think it is a game at the same time.

The kids I see for speech need the reading support and it is important to break down reading into smaller units. With the items I am requesting, I can do just that! It will also make learning fun. The kids love when they think they are playing a game and I love when they are learning doing just that.
