This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
"The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you'll go!" -Dr. Seuss
My students love learning through books, play, music, and art.
I work in a special education preschool classroom with students who have development disabilities such as Down Syndrome. My students have moderate to significant delays in the areas of receptive and expressive language, articulation, and social pragmatics. They are eager to learn, curious, and happy to come to school!
My Project
My class needs materials that provide ample communication opportunities which support continued speech and language development. Some of my students also need access to backpacks, as their families may not have the means to purchase one. Backpacks play an important role in parent-teacher communication all year long! The dramatic play items including dress-up clothes, play foods, and theme-based toys will be used throughout the year to provide my students with functional life skills. Books and story props will correlate with the theme-based curriculum and help foster a love of literature in the early years.
Developmentally appropriate and socially engaging theme-based curriculums have been shown to meaningful link "big ideas", broaden content vocabulary to deepen peer interactions, and provide continuity between the classroom and home life.
Your contribution will provide my students with materials that support language development, social interaction, and developmentally-appropriate life skills that they may not otherwise have access to. My students will use these skills as a foundation for learning for many years to come!
