My students are high school students ranging from ages 14-21 who have speech and language services mandated on their IEP. My students are classified as students with Autism, ASD, ADHD, Learning Disabilities, Hearing Impaired, Vision Impaired, Social and Emotional Deficits and other diagnoses.
My students are amazing young adults who rely on speech and language services in order to support them in their high school career, as well as prepare them for independent living post high school.
Speech is a place where they feel comfortable due to the small group size or individual sessions. My students often struggle with social skills and have minimal to no social interaction with their peers due to their poor pragmatic skills. I love watching confidence grow and friendships flourish in speech and hope to create more bonds this year.
My Project
Covid-19 has shaken up the space availability in our building this year. My students used to be in a larger room with a window and now we are working in a much smaller space with the most minimal ventilation possible. We do not have air conditioners and are situated above the boiler room. The temperatures in our room can rise above 90 degrees during the winter. I am asking for a quiet fan to help cool my special needs students, as some of them also struggle with medical issues that cannot sustain warm temperatures.
