Our town, Slidell, Louisiana, was ground zero for Hurricane Katrina. All my students have been affected as a result of this disaster one way or another. Four hundred words is not enough to tell you of what we have experienced this school year. Several schools in our town were completely destroyed. Ours wasn't and we are up and running, trying to help our students return to normalcy. One result of the hurricane is that our school's speech teacher had to be transferred to help out at another school, and I took over her speech classes, in addition to my English classes. I haven't taught Speech in 25 years, but I am determined to give my 60 Speech students the best possible learning experience that I can. I have spent hundreds of dollars of my own money purchasing materials for my students over the last few weeks. There are several items that I feel that we desperately need that I cannot afford and our school system is struggling to keep its head above water since the hurricane. One is a camcorder to record the students' speeches, interviews, performances and debates. The camcorder I am requesting also has the ability to shot still photos, which we could use as well for numerous projects. Seeing themselves in action would provide the students with invaluable feedback about their speeches and performances, particularly debates.
