Help me give my students books they can use to enhance and access grade-level curriculum.
FULLY FUNDED! Mrs. Nelson's classroom raised $218

My Students
My students all struggle with various disabilities. These range from learning disabilities to severe autism. Special educators are not afforded the same supplies as regular classroom teachers, even though our students have more unique needs. They are the funniest, brightest, best kids I know. They face challenges in their daily lives that prevent most people from seeing who they truly are and what they're capable of, but I know what is underneath the stigma.
My students are warriors who battle disability and prejudice every day.
It takes a village to raise a child, and more to raise a child with a disability. My school has a very high population of students with disabilities, specifically autism. As the saying goes, "If you know one child with autism, you know one child with autism." They are all unique people who have individualized needs. It is extremely difficult to meet all of their needs on a daily basis, but it is my life's work. My students mean the world to me, and I would do anything for them.
My Project
My project focuses on books my students can use to enhance their learning in their general education classrooms. They provide additional examples of topics their classrooms study. For example, "The Secret Life of a Snowflake" will assist them in learning about the process of how snowflakes are made, but will also teach them to value their individuality. "Malala's Magic Pencil" will help them learn about educational equality, as they are learning about other heroes who have fought against injustice in class.
My students need extra support to understand what is being taught.
These books will provide them with just that: additional exposure to topics they are learning about in class. My students need as much exposure as they can get in order to truly learn, and these books will help both by giving them another chance to explore a topic, but also because these books teach lessons. These lessons will be explored by learning about the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, Jackie Robinson's life, as well as hope and empathy in "Teacup".
