My students need new, accurate books about the planets and dictionaries.

My Students
Our student population is racially and ethnically diverse. Over 20% are in ELL and/or Indian Education or SPED programs. We have students from Somalia, China, the Philippines, Vietnam, as well as Natives from rural Alaska. They attend school in one of the most diverse school systems in the United States. There are over 97 different languages in our district. They have warm smiles and they try very hard to listen and learn but they struggle because our school lacks a budget that supports them. Most of them are economically disadvantaged. They are struggling to stay above the poverty line. All of them are eligible for free breakfast and lunch. School is everything for them. It is a warm, safe place.
My students cannot go on field trips to museums or planetariums because they cannot afford it, instead they come to the library.
When the weather permits, we go on playground field trips.
After school, I work with groups of students who come to the library every day for added enrichment, support and homework help. They would love to learn more about "hot science topics".
My Project
Currently, the library is an after-school haven that is used by students in grades three to six. I help with enrichment activities and provide homework support but I want to add a science scholars component to these sessions. I am asking for a few new books on the planets that my students will be able to read, discuss, share and take home. I am also asking for dictionaries that they can take home and use to explore the meaning of scientific words and concepts.
I want to turn the library an after-school science exploration center.
I want to enable students to become familiar with the science topics that interest them. During the course of the school day, there is just not enough time to fully explore all the topics. I also want students to think about what they (can) learn before they come to school.
I plan to have students read books about planets, marine animals and other topics. Then we will have a "What did you learn before you came to school bowl". Students will pick a subject card, share something interesting they learned about the subject and cite their source. They will share what they learned about animals, planets, marine animals and other science topics. We will vote on the best/most interesting answers.
Students will use these books to learn about planets. They will be able to take their books home for further study. They also have dictionaries they can take home to use to further their understanding.
My school does not have any funds for this type of project. Please help my soon-to-be scientists.
