Do you remember sitting in your elementary classroom and having hands-on manipulatives to aid you in early learning. Did you have educational games to aid in your learning? Did you have technology to help you practice skills independently? My current students do not always have these materials.
I have the honor of teaching 12 students with cognitive disabilities and autism.
They are a great group of girls and boys who learn best in non-conventional ways. My school is in a large, urban district in Wisconsin, where many of the students receive a free and/or reduced lunch. My students have such significant needs, that they are in a small classroom with extra adult support to help them achieve their goals. My students LOVE to learn and learn the best through hands-on learning. It is a my goal to provide them as many learning opportunities as I possibly can.
My Project
One of the greatest things that I have in my classroom is an interactive whiteboard. I am asking for many games that can be used on the board for students to practice skills independently. The beauty of these games is that it gives students immediate feedback to whether they are correct or not. It allows for students to be independent, which is such an important skill for them.
I am also requesting writing materials to help students become functional writers. Writing is a struggle for many of my students as the words "get stuck" in their heads. The sentence building sets will help to "unstick" the words from their head and get their thoughts on paper.
Finally, I am asking for some math manipulatives to help students learn basic number concepts all the way to working on word problems. Many of my students are literal and need the clues to solve even the most basic of equations.
All of these things are just some of the many different keys we need to unlock what our students know.
These materials can help change a student's academic achievement in many different ways. Through your generosity, you can be apart of this phenomenon. My students are amazing and have the right to have every educational experience that they can and I ask you to help them on their journey.
