Special Students Need Flexible Seating

My Students

I am a special education teacher in a town located in Central Illinois. Our school has so many students with cultural diversity (6 of the 7 continents are represented at Glenn!) At Glenn Elementary 39% of our students are low income, 13% high mobility, 12% chronic absenteeism, and 11% English language learners. As a special education teacher, I serve many students with differing special needs in my classroom throughout the day. Each student that enters my classroom is unique ranging from students with Autism to students with Developmental Delays. Please help me help them learn endlessly on how to deal with different emotions with social-emotional tactile materials and more flexible seating options.

I will continue to use flexible seating around our special education classroom and offer more opportunities to help students regulate their social-emotional needs.

Studies have shown the more human body is able to move the more information they are able to learn. This project would support 30 K-5th graders with special needs!

My Project

I see a variety of students with all kinds of needs throughout the school day. Currently, we have traditional seating. Our table is old and rectangular which is not ideal in our small group setting. With this new furniture, my students will be able to focus on learning while their bodies keep moving. The stools are adjustable so when there are different grade levels they can adjust the height of the stool. I am also requesting blue light filters to help soften the harsh lighting in my classroom.

When given a choice of where to sit, my students are noticeably more engaged.

My focus is to teach reading and writing to grades kindergarten through fifth grade. Some of my students have developmental delays and struggle in these two areas. So, the LEGO story starters are a great hands-on activity for students to get creative with adding important details to their writing.
