My Students

I am a current Kindergarten teacher in a Title I school district where 60% of students are from low socioeconomic homes. Our student population is ethically and culturally diverse and 72% of students are English Language Learners.

Due to Hurricane Harvey, we will receive an influx of students from other local school districts.

Approximately 25% of our own student body were directly affected by Hurricane Harvey. Many of these students have lost their school supplies, homes have been destroyed and family belongings due to the flood.

Even though my students have gone through many challenges and hardships , they are determined to succeed in the classroom.

My Project

While teaching calendar, my students do not know where to sit because there is not a defined seating area on that side of my classroom. I do not have a rug with seating arrangements for each group. I spend lots of time telling kindergarten students where to sit and how to sit. It is hard for my students and my self to focus on math instruction without proper seating arrangements.

Due to Hurricane Harvey, displaced students may feel restless, have trouble concentrating and suffer from some irritability.

Children who have experienced major life changing events need to have a structured classroom. I need a small rug to make a defined space for Every Day Counts Math area! My students need to know where their spot is on a rug. It will reduce the time I need to tell them where to sit. This will increase the level of structure in my classroom, which will make my students less anxious.
