My Students

I teach nine students with severe emotional disabilities. They struggle to respond appropriately or regulate their emotions when faced with typical challenges in the classroom (challenging tasks, other students saying unkind things, and being asked to wait for attention or a preferred activity). Many of them come from traumatic backgrounds that further complicate their ability to regulate their emotions appropriately. They all receive free breakfast and lunch daily at the Title I school where they attend. Most of my students come to school without the supplies, resources, or emotional support they need to be successful in today's educational system.

Despite the challenges they face because of their disabilities, my students work hard to learn how to regulate their emotions and use coping skills.

Every tiny step of progress is worth celebrating with them! One tool I use in my classroom is books about social emotional topics. Picture books help my students to understand the perspective of others, broaden their emotion vocabulary, and learn new coping strategies. Even on a rough day, my students are able to engage with the characters in a book to help them reset.

My Project

I will use these books to teach literature based social skills lessons to help my students to understand their emotions and learn appropriate behavior in response to their feelings. Many of my students do not understand why their behavior is not expected or appropriate. They do not understand their feelings or the feelings of others. These picture books will help my students to have concrete examples they can refer back to throughout the year.

Reading these picture books will help my students understand their thoughts and feelings and the thoughts and feelings of others.

Learning empathy will help them become better citizens who are able to participate appropriately in society as they grow up.
