My Students

I know every teacher says his/her students are special, but mine truly are. We have 12 amazing students in our TLC (The Learning Classroom) Special Education classroom. Everyday my students work on not just their curriculum, but we also focus on life skills. My students are ones who need a little more assistance than they would get in a general education setting. Our classroom is made up of students on the Autism spectrum, Downs Syndrome, Traumatic Brain Injuries, and more. On top of that, our school, Gene Howe, is also a Title I school. This means, over half of our students come from low-income households.

My students do absolutely amazing things everyday, but sometimes they need a few more materials to help them reach their full potential.

This is where our Donor's Choose project comes into play. As a second year teacher, I have a better feel as to what our classroom needs in terms of materials, and what not. However, I cannot afford everything for my room on my budget. You as a donor to our classroom will allow for us to purchase items that we need for our classroom and reach our goals!

My Project

These materials will help my students become more independent and help self-regulate their sensory needs.

The materials that are more functional will help them become more independent in both daily life skills as well as in educational ways.

For example, the alphabet cards will help our younger students identify their letter names and sounds.

The sensory items will help prevent meltdowns, by helping students self-regulate their sensory needs. It will also allow students to use them in rewards systems as well. In our classroom, we use a "First Work, Then ___" model. Often times students preferred activities are things such as playing with play-doh, or drawing. They have learned that if they first work, later they get these sensory rewards.
