This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are autistic, intellectually disabled, speech impaired and/or other health impaired.

They enjoy coming to school every day.

Each one thrives on structure and routine. Their favorite time of day is "Sign-in & Calendar" when they use the Activboard, greet each other, perform calendar tasks, and "show off."

Our school is very supportive and inclusive. My students enjoy participating in activities such as reading buddies, grade level inclusion, and peer to peer mentoring. Wherever we go in school, other students call out "hello" to my students and call them by name. They ARE an important part of our school community.

My Project

Autistic children can be overloaded by sensory information. It can be due to sights/lights, sounds, smells, textures or anything they feel as intrusive. Sensory overload can express itself through aggressive behaviors; inability to keep clothing on due to the feel or texture of materials; crying and covering ears due to perceived loud sounds; elopement or running from an area/classroom, etc. Weighted blankets help some autistic children to calm and recover from sensory overload in-order to rejoin the learning environment. In some cases, they may only need to sit with the blanket for a few minutes. Learning can not take place when a child is distressed.
