Special Needs Students Need Laptop for STEM

My students need a Macbook Air laptop.

FULLY FUNDED! Mrs. Santiago's classroom raised $1,349

My Students

My students have learned a great deal these past few years--they have grown. My goal is to help create independent learners who will be able to transition to high school and a career in their future. All of my students are special needs children who have autism or are intellectually disabled.

My students need to better themselves in the areas of math, science, engineering, and technology.

They have laptops but they are old. If we can start by funding one laptop at a time, we are ahead of the game. They have tried coding, they have tried using Microsoft Office, and this year they will be working in-depth with Lego robotics and computer programming using STEM and various STEAM kits. My students will be able to better themselves and learn 21st century skills that they need to become anything they want. Many of my students want to become computer programmers, they want to write code for computer video games, and they want to see their projects come to life. I would like to be able to help them do it. I want to teach them APPLIED LEARNING SKILLS necessary for them to become college and career ready.

My Project

My students would use this one new laptop to learn programming. They will be using the laptop to work three Lego robotics kits that were purchased for us. They will be able to take and carry a lightweight laptop to the areas where they need to use it. Our older laptops are weighty and not so easy for my students to carry, so asking for a newer laptop would help out in this area. My students would also use this laptop to see how technology changes from year to year, and to be able to apply their knowledge to using newer versions of technology. The new STEM concepts our district wants Special Needs students to learn are wonderful but will not work on the older, obsolete equipment.

If we get this laptop, it would make a difference in my students' lives by allowing them to continue to work on new equipment.

It would allow them to apply new APPLIED LEARNING SKILLS to projects they want to do. They will be able to work and not have to call me over to tell me their laptop froze. It will make a difference because my students need to stay current and fit in when using laptops to apply for work, a library card, or any other area that has laptops in a work setting.
