Special Needs Students Need Family Night Items to Play and Learn

Help me give my students action figures, girl dolls, kinesthetic sand, STEM kits for family night play nights.

My Students

All of the students I teach are special needs children. Their age places them in a middle school setting; however, they all function on a much lower grade level. Almost all of my students live a guarded life at home and at school. Some of my students are classified as intellectually delayed and function well behind their age/grade level; some have emotional disturbances and need extra support in the classroom.

My students need to learn how to have fun just like everyone else does and not be fearful of who is watching them.

This is the first school year that we were able to teach to the students' and not to the state's needs. The students' abilities are more important than providing data to the state. This school year we taught in a less conventional way, to get life skills across to them. We have pet-assisted learning animals in the classroom, a site therapy dog, hygiene skills, and hands-on learning and community-based projects along with a program to combat childhood obesity. These are all skills that our students need to learn how to do for themselves.

My Project

Our students learn best through play. What looks like play and playing around to you is really interactive learning to them. I would like to be able to send home one item to each of my 80 students to promote family night. I would like to be able to have my students’ parents be able to work with their child the same way they work in school. If we had the "toys" to show and give to our student's parents, we might show more growth in our student's academic progress.

This year we would like to be able to show our students have made academic progress through interactive play.

This might not be a conventional way of promoting education but it works with our population of students. By being able to tap into our students’ likes we can hold their interest a little longer and work on skills they need to become a little more independent then they are now.
