All of the students I teach are special needs children. Their age places them in a middle school setting; however, they all function on a much lower grade level. Almost all of my students live a guarded life at home and at school. Some of my students are classified as intellectually delayed and function well behind their age/grade level; some have emotional disturbances and need extra support in the classroom.
My students need to learn how to have fun just like everyone else does and not be fearful of who is watching them.
This is the first school year that we were able to teach to the students' and not to the state's needs. The students' abilities are more important than providing data to the state. This school year we taught in a less conventional way, to get life skills across to them. We have pet-assisted learning animals in the classroom, a site therapy dog, hygiene skills, and hands-on learning and community-based projects along a program to combat childhood obesity. All skills our students need to learn how to do for themselves.
My Project
My students are all classified as special needs and the staff at my school has taken it upon ourselves to help maintain the safety of our students at all costs. We have made it our mission to make sure they go home in the same way they came into school. We do this by teaching our students the first thing they do when they walk into the school is to put on their ID tag. This has their name and the school name and phone number in case anything happens.
There have been stories of special needs students walking out of their schools only to be lost; we don't ever want this to happen to a student.
If a student ever does walk away, they will have identification on them to help get them back to us in the school.
By having an ID badge maker, we are able to produce ID tags that can be worn daily, and if the tag is destroyed or lost, we have the ability to make another right then and there. Please help us purchase this printer to keep our students safe to help them learn about having identification on them at all times.
