Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Our special needs student typically graduate from high school after 4 years at the age of 18 or so. Many of them remain in school even after that for several years to continue to develop skills they can use for life. Many of these skills are ones that we take for granted such as grocery shopping, cooking, taking an order over the phone, or having a skill you can use in a job. My school district recently opened a Transition Academy for special needs students who have completed their graduation requirements and who still benefit from further developing their life skills. This is our first full year of having this Transition Academy, and I am the lead teacher. We are working to transform an older district building into a learning space for our amazing students to learn how to plan a menu and cook a nutritious meal as well as other important skills. Several days a week, our students also go into the community and work for local businesses who allow us to "intern" and learn hands-on skills. We also learn about having a "small business" in our Transition Academy by having a store front where students not only greet customers and conduct transactions but where they also provide the items for sale. We sell t-shirts, personalized mugs, stickers, and a variety of custom items using vinyl, a Cricut machine, and the students' creativity. We are in need of a vinyl heat press that will allow our students to make more professional looking items to sell. We are not making a "profit" but rather seeking to be a more sustainable in generating income to support more items for sale in our store and for having more opportunities for our students to have hands-on and real world learning experiences.
