My students are children aged 3-5 who have developmental delays. These delays can be in the areas of communication, fine/gross motor, cognition, adaptive skills, and social emotional skills. Some students have delays in all five areas, and some only have delays in a couple of areas.
During center time, we have 3 centers paired with adults.
These include the work with teacher center, science/math center, and art. We are lacking a center where the children can practice monitoring themselves, without adult assistance. We think a story listening center will be a fantastic addition!
My Project
One major thing our children need to work on, is staying in a center without adult assistance, because once they get to kindergarten, there are not 3 adults in the classroom, to run centers. I feel a listening center would help us add an enjoyable center, for them to rotate through, where they can have fun, and enjoy listening to the stories. We currently have a reading center, but the children don't enjoy it very much, because they can't read. This leads to them not wanting to access this center. I feel they would REALLY enjoy the books on CD, because all of our children enjoy having stories read to them. During circle time, the story is their favorite part of the day!
Donations to this project will add many things to our class: including early exposure to literacy, learning to self manage, increase of attention span, and a fun way to learn without having the assistance of an adult.
Most of all, it will add a love of stories and literature as a way to spend personal time, for the children!
