Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

It is a one of a kind classroom with twelve eager learners with special needs. The class consists of three grade levels. Students of diverse abilities work together to improve their social skills, life skills, and strive to build a foundation in literacy and social studies.

This project would impact a special education classroom in an urban, high-poverty school district.

The class consists of twelve incredible students. I am lucky enough to have the opportunity to teach my students for three consecutive years. Our unique classroom consists of grades six to eight in which all students participate in NYS Alternate Assessments. Every year, as I attend eighth grade graduation, I am proud of the accomplishments and the progress my students have made. The students in my classroom all have significant delays in learning. Working in a classroom with students with Intellectual Disabilities, Multiple Disabilities and students on the Autism Spectrum, has been incredibly rewarding.

My Project

Although this classroom is in a middle school, the level of intellectual functioning ranges from K-third grade. It is difficult to find appropriate curriculum materials as the building does not have any materials geared towards elementary levels. A strong reading program, along with all necessary materials, would allow students to build a foundation in literacy. The Reading and Writing Activity Stations would allow for literacy centers that will foster phonics learning, and reading comprehension and foundations in writing. The Let's Talk! Conversations starters will allow students the opportunity to communicate with one another and build their social skills. Many of the alternate assessment students struggle with learning to socialize with peers in appropriate and acceptable ways. The Social Studies Resource Boxes and Scholastic magazines will help them learn about the world and current events. I plan to use all materials for hands-on, center-based learning.

This project is specifically geared towards a very special and unique classroom.

The materials from this project will drastically impact and change my students' lives. They have struggled academically and socially throughout their schooling. I want that to change in my classroom. I want them to look back at the years spent in my classroom as ones of growth, positivity, and friendship. The materials for literacy, social studies, and social skills from this project will make a huge difference!
