Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students have learning disabilities in the mild/moderate range and are part of the RSP program. Most of them are hindered by visual and/or auditory processing deficits which makes it hard for them to take in and organize information but there are a variety of other factors that affect their ability to learn such as Attention Deficit Disorder, Attention Hyperactivity Deficit Disorder, Autism, Emotional Disturbance, and a host of other conditions that often appear in combination. In addition, the majority of my students are English Language Learners and live in a socio-economically challenged area (the part of Anaheim that is not the happiest place on Earth) that is significantly affected by crime and homelessness with some of my students being homeless themselves. Many of my students have a challenging home life. I have had students who were abandoned at a park by their parents and others who have been forced to sleep on the porch. They are from families who struggle and cannot afford simple things like binders and calculators. Any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated.

My Project

These materials will help my special needs students with organization and participation. As students with learning disabilities they often are challenged in the area of executive functioning (organizing information and flexible thinking) which directly affects their ability to be successful in school. Disorganization causes chaos which results in falling behind and giving up. Color coded-3 hole punch folders and composition books help manage materials/information and the tracing tool helps to build confidence with orthopedically challenged students who might otherwise rather not attempt a project than to have their weakness exposed.
