My students need dictionaries to aid vocabulary, Hot Dots to assist with math skills, document camera, and supplies, such as pens, pencils, Scholastic Action, folders, and Post-it notes, just to aid in their success!
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Everyday I try to make our classroom the most safe, interactive, and enjoyable learning environment. There is no typical day in a special needs classroom; what is typical is that many students lack the basics. I don't want our classroom to lack anything they need to succeed!
We are an 8th grade 12:1:1 class, each child has a special need that we must address to be successful.
My students come from a variety of backgrounds, either Hispanic or African American but all are from the inner city. We are in a high poverty area and at times they lack the basic supplies needed. My students have faced many challenges in their education and I don't want their last year in middle school to be one of them. At times we lack enough textbooks, or even books that they can read so I want to start the year with bang.
My Project
My students should get the most out of their daily classroom experience. Having the tools necessary to reach a wide range of education levels is critical. For our classroom I have requested dictionaries/thesaurus to aid in vocabulary acquisition. A document camera will help to share a page with the entire class at the same time when textbooks aren't available. Basic supplies (pens, pencils, Post-it notes, Hot Dot pens and cards, and folders) to assure that all have the same opportunities to succeed this year.
My students struggle with reading and I wanted to give them various entry points, Scholastic Magazines, as well as other high interest, middle school books. My students are eager to read something from my favorite author so together they will read in pairs a variety of his young adult books. I want to open their eyes to the world of success!
My students know when they enter our classroom it is a doorway to their future.
I want them to start their last year in middle school on the right path. My students face many difficulties in their lives outside the classroom, inside shouldn't be difficult. Increase in vocabulary helps with reading and building confidence. With the supplies we are asking for, it will be a positive reinforcement to our students that not only do I care about them, but others around the world do too!
