This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
In my specialized classroom, we have multiple needs of all different levels. Being in the middle school age group, some of those needs can be more focused on learning abilities and some on behavior and emotional needs. My goal is to create and maintain an environment with leveled resources for all.
This request for classroom supplies comes at a time when our student numbers and needs are rising drastically while our teaching population on campus is declining.
Being in a Title 1 school, I try to provide my students with a loving and supportive environment. Many of my students have environmental needs that have to be addressed before the learning can even begin. That’s where the bouncey bands, wobble seats and pillows are so beneficial to their learning. Students will bounce their feet while doing work instead of getting out of the desk, throwing things or running around bothering others. They will grab a pillow and sit along the walls or under a table as their ‘safe space’ some days and just focus to complete their work. Many days we don’t know why they do some things but to meet them at their level and support them to learn skills to get through the nervousness, hyperactivity or emotional moment to get back to center and do their work is what it’s all about.
The remainder of the supplies, such as the games, pencils, and whiteboards are to use in connection with our lessons to build better foundations of basic skills and work on their IEP goals (Individual Education Plan). I teach numerous levels in my classroom from mild to moderate, specific learning disabilities, behavior disorders, students with autism and much more. My request has something for all and with the specific needs of my learning disabled students. Thank you for considering!
