Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach in a Title I school located in a low-social economic neighborhood near Downtown Los Angeles, 100 percent of the student population qualify for the free or reduced lunch program.
The students in my classroom are students with learning disabilities but they come to school everyday with a great big smile on their faces.
My class is made up of students with a range of disabilities, such as Autism, Intellectually Delayed, Health Impairments, and Specific Learning Disabilities. Many of them have physical challenges as well that impair their learning but they come to school eager to learn and take on new challenges.
My Project
My special education students have brilliant minds. They show up to our zoom class meetings everyday with a smile and a willingness to learn. We have climbed many online learning hurdles during this pandemic and they have learned so much on how to manage their learning at home, but they would benefit from hands-on tools they can use at home to help connect what I am presenting in my lessons. My students with Autism learn from a range of ways but one thing they all have in common is being kinesthetic learner.
They need hands-on learning kits to help them learn while at home.
The magnetic white boards along with the alphabet letters will allow my students to build words or sentences and practice phonics skills while manipulating sounds in words. They will also use the whiteboards to practice basic handwriting skills using the dry-erase markers. I am also asking for math toolbox kits that will provide my students with the manipulatives required during our math period. They will be able to practice basic math skills with a hand-on approach. They get to see, do, and learn.
These manipulatives will allow me to demonstrate a concept to them and guide them through their thinking process. They will also get to practice and demonstrate their thinking to me in an organize manner, that will help eliminate frustration a home. Please help bring learning materials to my students hands.
