Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are kindergartners and first graders with mild to moderate special needs, including Autism Spectrum Disorder, Intellectual Disability, Specific Learning Disabilities, and Speech and Language Impairment among other behavioral and sensory issues. FES is a Title I school; 50% of my students are also English Language Learners and 100% of them are also eligible for free/reduced price lunch, meaning they come from low-income homes. Many of the families cannot afford to provide school supplies for their children and the responsibility falls onto their educators.
My Project
My students with special learning needs require constant use of hands-on materials, images, pictures, and documentation to understand new concepts and materials. We currently have a color printer in our classroom that supplies various worksheets and aids throughout the week. The color ink will provide exciting visual supports and interesting worksheets.
We use visuals and images as writing prompts and as the foundation for various classroom discussions.
Visuals and pictures also support the learning of my students who are English Language Learners.
My students also benefit from the documentation of activities and projects. Our Polaroid camera is a central part of creative projects, self-efficacy, and self-reflection for students who are learning about how they learn. The Polaroid film will be used by students to document work and by me to document and create learning prompts. Our class will use the art materials, social skills imagery, and laminating sheets to create exciting visual projects and learning aides.
