My Students

Remember learning about the outside world in science class? How the earth rotates around the sun and the reason for the seasons? I teach Special Education science classes and we are in need of materials to do hands on learning. These students need hands-on and visual support with curriculum.

My students are all in Special Education and have disabilities such as from processing disorders, autism and cognitive impairments.

They are sweet and inquisitive and always ask to do hands-on experiments and learning. Book work and note taking is not their learning styles and many need multiple means of processing information. My school is the largest high school in the county with a large number of Special Education students.

My Project

My students need hands-on materials such as Model solar system, microscopes, model volcano and cross section Earth model. globes & a mineral kit to learn and engage with science! My students will learn using the materials to understand the world they live in. Knowing that the moon rotates around the earth and things like why we different phases of the moon are essential questions that using hands-on materials will help my students to understand. I envision students getting a clear understanding of the earth and galaxy we live in by being able to see, touch and experiment with globes, models of earth systems and microscopes.

Donations to this project will greatly improve my classroom as my special education students will really have the feeling that they are valued at the school.

Often, they do not receive the same level of support in terms of curriculum as the general education population although they are students who need hands on learning. It will change their lives for the better as they can have the empowerment of knowing about the world we live in from a scientific viewpoint and being curious about life!
