My Project
Our school is home to a district sanctioned Structured Learning Classroom special education program. This program has students from K-5 that are sent here from various schools without the district. We are an academically focused program for students with cognitive impairment. We have looked all years for ways to help educate our students engage with read aloud and various reading activities, even if they cannot read.
Our staff is diverse with our own identities and we want to make sure that the students are educated and informed about the importance of diversity to help them learn and support marginalized communities.
Teaching our nerodivergent students about neurodiversity and giving them the words and language to advocate for themselves is very important.
Our students come in all shapes and sizes, we have students that are non-verbal, selective mute, or with any number of genetic or chromosomal disabilities. They do not all look the same as each other and it is not always visible that they have a disability, it is important that as they get older they are given support to help advocate for themselves.
