Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

We are an integrated collaborative teaching (ICT) first-grade class, with a mixture of general and special education students at a high-needs, Title I school in the Bronx. While the majority of students come from low-income homes or from homes with limited parental involvement, they are enthusiastic and come to school every day ready to learn. They see school as a consistent part of their daily lives and love to make me proud.

My first graders are some of the happiest children I have ever had the pleasure of working with, and they inspire me to provide the best education I can for them.

My Project

The students in my class have been diagnosed with disabilities such as autism, speech and language disorders, and learning disabilities. The special education students in my class have very different learning styles. However, most of these students benefit from new material presented visually. Visual thinking and learning utilize graphical ways of working with ideas and presenting information. Research in both educational theory and cognitive psychology tells us that visual learning is among the very best methods for teaching students of all ages how to think and learn. A new color printer would allow us to print images to help students gain a deeper understanding of new material, and toner cartridges will ensure that we don’t run out of color too quickly.

This project will provide my students with the welcoming and engaging classroom they deserve.

It will allow me to produce a print-rich environment which is necessary for First graders to progress and learn in. The reading curriculum we use requires me to print a lot of color graphics. The visual representation of words is a big part of how my students learn and they would struggle without them. I do my best to get my students the materials they need, but sometimes we need help from others. Having access to a color printer is not a luxury, it is a necessity.
