Special Education Classroom Needs Chapter Books to Increase Reading Stamina

My students need new reading material like The Diary of a Wimpy Kid, Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing, Charlotte's Web, Freckle Juice, and others in a cash strapped school district.

FULLY FUNDED! Ms. Riddle's classroom raised $387

This project is fully funded

My Students

My students are enrolled in a Special Education Cross Categorical classroom, which means that the students possess a myriad of exceptionalities - ranging from autism to specific learning disabilities to emotional/behavioral. Nevertheless, I teach with the same hopes and dreams as any great teacher would. I have been told by many that I am unrealistic in the goals and expectations that I have set forth for my students. However, these students never cease to amaze me. They are all reading, albeit well below grade level. They, as well as their parents, are as amazed as I am.

It is my extreme desire that you will help support my classroom in securing chapter books.

They have progressed so well that they are ready for (beginning) chapter books. We've previewed and they've given a stamp of approval to Diary Of A Wimpy Kid, Junie B. Jones, and Amelia Bedelia. We will accept new or used. Thank you so much for bringing joy and academic success to the most needy!

My Project

As the students are what can be described as emergent readers, it is in their best interest to remain engaged in Reading. Although they realize that they are functioning below their same aged peers, they still have not lost their motivation to become better readers.

They've asked repeatedly to begin reading chapter books (as their peers have), and I promised them that they would if their test scores improved.

Well, I am happy to report that each and every one of the students have made great gains. As you know, Chicago Public Schools are in the throes of a budget crisis; unfortunately we have been informed by the administration that there is no money in the budget for any new books (or anything else for that matter). Your assistance would be greatly appreciated.
