Special Education and ELLs Need Resources in Urban Classroom

My students need many resources such as a read along library, Spanish/English Flash Cards, Building Language Set, ELL Games, I can hear phones, and Dry erase markers.

My Students

Can you imagine being in a classroom and not having the resources you need to be successful? My students need a classroom that has the supplies necessary to teach students with diverse needs.

I am a teacher in a public school that is located in an urban district.

My classroom consists of 20 students, 16 of which are English Language Learners and 8 are on a Individual Education Plans for Special Education Services that range from speech and language, occupational therapy, and academic support for learning disabilities. My students all have varying levels of English ranging from completely understanding spoken and written English, to not understanding any English at all. The majority of the students are Spanish speaking and are embracing the opportunity of helping their peers learn how to speak and write in English. My students receive pull-out support for their special education services, but they spend the majority of the day with me. When they are not receiving their pull-out services, they need the resources necessary to be successful in a general education classroom.

My Project

With the resources in this project, I will be able to have a classroom that is a model for whole class and small groups leaning. Students will know where to go during center time and have excellent resources so they are able to focus on learning. First there will be a clearly defined reading area with a rug that I can gather students to introduce the daily lessons. Next they will also have a clearly defined listening center with various high quality read along books that they can practice their comprehension and fluency with. In the reading center my ELLs can independently access the different games, learning activities and flash cards. The small easel will help me lead my small groups where the students follow along with the wipe off sheets so they can monitor their own progress. Also, the cushions will make it possible for students to either work alone or with an partner anywhere in the classroom.They will also have the art tools necessary to do projects that support the curriculum.

If my project is funded my students will have a classroom environment that is engaging and that has high quality resources to meet the needs of my ELLs as well as my special education students.

My students will be more engaged and more independent. The reading resources will help to foster a love of reading because all students will be able to access the different books.This project will make a huge difference in the education of my students.
