My Students

Have you ever been afraid to speak in front of a group? Imagine how it might feel if English was not your first language. My goal is to use new and engaging materials to motivate my first graders to develop improved oral and written language skills.

My students attend a large urban public school.

A majority of the students are considered high poverty. A third of my students are English language learners (ELL). Our school is the most culturally diverse in the district. Our school is host to many refugee families. My wonderful first graders are eager to learn new vocabulary and are soaking in new wards daily. This is important because many of their parents do not speak English and are unable to assist with homework. However, many of the students are timid and need encouragement and practice using the new language in which they have been immersed. My classroom also includes special education students as well as speech and language students who can greatly benefit from language development.

My Project

Language learning picture cards will help students develop their vocabulary. With the cards, students will work to identify items, create sentences and share stories about the pictures. New journals will help students with written language and prepare them to share stories orally. Fluency cards, and activities will give students the opportunity to work on the delivery of their ideas. I'd like to use as many hands-on materials as possible to keep the students engaged and enthused about learning. The new resources will be used both in large and small groups during literacy and language stations. Students will work to use new vocabulary in sentences and stories. Students will work to publish their written work and present it orally to the class. The class, in turn, will provide oral and written feedback.

I feel the more comfortable and confident the students become in their language skills, the more they will use them both in written and oral form.

All a first grader needs is a safe learning environment where they can be engaged in learning with interesting and motivating materials. The impact of students sharing their ideas is magnificent. Not only do they gain pride in their skills but they set good examples for other students. These new materials will be used with many classes to come.
