Speak, Sing, Dance, Play! Xylophones for Mrs. L's Students

My students need two more xylophones in the music room to have more time to learn and create with a partner instead of sharing an instrument with three or four students.

My students are a diverse group of kids who live in a high-poverty rural area.

Children at my school are working hard to overcome many different obstacles that life has put in their path. Every day all of our students receive both breakfast and lunch free of charge, and many receive a bag of food each Friday to ensure they get healthy meals over the weekend. Despite the numerous challenges they face, students at my school are respectful, hard-working, joyful children. They improve themselves academically, socially, and emotionally every day, striving to reach their full potential.

My Project

In music class, children begin with what they do instinctively: play! Imitation, experimentation, and personal expression occur naturally as students learn to speak poems rhythmically, sing expressively, and then create body percussion and instrument parts to go along with their songs and poems. By providing more xylophones in my classroom, we can expand my students' learning opportunities as they become confident, life-long musicians and creative problem solvers.

The music classroom in my school serves nearly 400 unique students each week.

These xylophones will be used by all of the students at our school, and will last for 10+ years. Just a few instruments could end up impacting the lives of hundreds, or even thousands, of students.

Currently, when we play xylophones students have to take turns, often sharing one instrument between 3 or 4 students. By adding only a few more instruments, we will be able to have only 2 students at a time taking turns on the same instrument, which will help free up precious time to help students get more individualized attention.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
