This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
Mental health has been affecting our community and our students in more than one way. In speaking to adults from the community they share that they lack knowledge in mental health and manners to address it. Often individuals with mental health needs are unaware of how to seek support. Parents and adults also share that they do not always know how to best respond when a child is escalated or feeling unwell. The lack of mental health awareness and availability to resources has become an alarming issue and is a great deficit in the community.
The items we are requesting will help create a space for mental health awareness in our community .
Students will learn about mental health and identify resources and calming strategies.
Students will work alongside teachers and the psychiatric social worker to create flyers and pamphlets regarding mental health. They will include coping strategies, resources and service workers. They will be given out to community members and placed in our school's community center.
A mental health awareness corner will be created on campus. It will be adorned to be welcoming and filled with resources for the community. Fidgets, games and other tools will be placed in cubbies and organized in bookshelves.
This project is going to impact our community by creating mental health awareness and providing our community with the tools to speak out and find help when necessary.
