One of the most valuable learning tools available to students today is something that has been available for centuries... a book! Novel-reading increases vocabulary, reading speed and fluency, voice in writing, and more! Literature Circles provide students with quality literature to read, a structured environment to discuss what they have read, and the chance to build social skills! Seventh-grade language arts students have a very strong need to build communication skills. As adults, they will need to be able to communicate in all types of settings. This project will give them the opportunity to do just that! Many students at my school do not come from homes where literacy is valued, and they are often not encouraged to read at home or discuss the books they read in school with their families. Many students receive subsidized meals and have to help out at home with raising brothers and sisters. It is my hope that this project will encourage them to read and discuss their reading at home, changing the way the community views literacy, one step at a time. During this project, students will read novels of their choice in groups of 4-5 students. As they read, they will take on specific roles in the group and lead parts of the book discussion. Students will record their conversations using digital recorders. These recorders will allow students to keep an audio-diary of their book club experience, and it will also give the instructor a chance to hear each individual child's perspective on the novels he or she reads. This will allow the instructor to plan more individualized instruction for students. Students will also able to listen to other groups' conversations and make connections to their own group's conversations. To complete this project, students will need sets of novels, which I will provide, but they will also need digital recorders to record their conversations. I truly believe that this project will be a memorable experience for students. I believe they will become more effective communicators, more proficient readers, and they will grow to value literacy.
