Spatial Visualization Cubes

My students need wooden cubes to manipulate and explore spatial visualization skills and to finally glue them together to form geometric shapes.

My Students

Geometry comes alive when students are able to manipulate and explore geometric pieces right in front of them.

My 7th grade math students are inquisitive, motivated, and tactile learners when they are each able to manipulate items at their own desks.

We are at a low income school where over half of our students are on free or reduced breakfast and lunch, and for some families, buying school supplies is a hardship. Our building has more feeder schools than any other middle school in our town with over 6 elementary schools sending students to us. With such a diverse population, it is difficult to reach all students with only textbooks to use.

My Project

The cubes I am requesting will allow each student to have 25 cubes at their desk to manipulate and explore spatial visualization. We will transition from 2-dimensional to 3-dimensional activities with the blocks. Students will build models from different views on a worksheet which shows top views, side views and front views. Once they have built the model, they will be able to explore perimeters, surface area, volume, and number of vertices. From there we continue on with isometric drawings of a construction. This excites my 7th graders as they develop the 4-view drawings of different models. Drawing exploded isometric views is a complex activity with many challenges as we continue to explore volume, area, perimeters and vertices. We end this hands-on unit with each student taking the cubes and making their own Soma cube puzzle. This problem solving, hands-on activity is then theirs to keep and to take home to their families to show how much geometric sense they have acquired.

7th graders need hands on activities to make mathematics come alive.

With these blocks and with the unit on spatial visualization, my students understand and have a fascination with geometry and different views of a structure. This truly opens the door and gets them excited about learning more in depth in the areas of engineering, architecture, building and other types of artistry.
