We need supplies to help us make crafts that sparkle and shine! We will decorate mini boxes and design unique friendship bracelets. We like to create cards for special occasions, too.
Students range from 14-18 and many are learning English as a second language. Located in the sunny Mission, every day teen moms and babies come to school. Young women can start at our school while they are expecting and continue after their baby is born. Students continue with their academic education as well as learning parenting skills, healthy baby strategies and useful community resources (including jobs & money management).
Until 2014, there was no library at HHS. Our library includes books and electronic resources for academics and a maker space as well as pleasure reading.
Our students have very busy lives filled with school, homework, jobs and family responsibilities of caring full time for an infant! When they come to school, they are eager to learn both academic work and parenting skills.
Students will learn short and long term project planning, patience and the benefits of a creative work as they design various projects. In the library makerspace they are self directed, choosing a project and work on the various steps to complete the project. Several students share their step-by-step directions for boxes, friendship bracelets, pop-up greeting cards and sequined photo frames.
Students are responsible for the organization, clean up and keeping a list of supplies when they run low. Many students also encourage other students to visit the makerspace and try out a new craft.
These leadership and planning skills also prepare them for developing a business, perhaps creating and selling crafts.
In Their Own Words
Joslyn-Last semester we made some cards but the paper was too thin. We like to make thank you cards for people who help and who donate to our school.
Blanca-I have made one friendship bracelet and I want to show my classmates how easy and fun this project is.
Paolo-At the end of last year we had so much fun decorating mini boxes BUT we used them all up! Our new students will love to make the boxes.
Joslyn-I will make a 'how to' poster for making thank you cards. I will include a sample for each step. I will also help new students.
Blanca-I love to work with fabric, ribbons and embroidery floss so I will make sure these supplies are carefully organized and not a big tangled mess (that did happen last year and I straightened then out.)
Paolo-I will make sure all the new students feel welcomed and find some creative project to work on!
Joslyn-We spend a lot of time on school work and with our babies. Sometimes it is so fun to make something creative.
Blanca-The students here need a break sometimes and the makerspace lets us relax & create (and we are still learning!)
Paola-It is so great to make something beautiful even if it is tiny! I know the new students will love these projects.
