Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are diverse, learning to empathize and be better human beings. They are willing to learn, and are quick to correct and learn from their mistakes. Our school has qualified for 100% free lunch and breakfast due to not many students having the proper access to resources. Our school budget has decreased by hundreds of thousands of dollars, leaving no room for personal classroom libraries, unless purchased personally. The students in our school deserve to have reading material in the class and the opportunity to fall in love with reading.
My Project
I am always teaching the students about various topics that are related to English such as feminism, history (we recently learned about the Rwanda Genocide) and psychology. All of these subjects and "grad-style" conversations we have intrigue them to want to learn more but we do not have the resources to expand upon what they have learned. Having a variety of genres and literary styles for students to choose from will allow them to see the different books available in the world, and open their mind to reading something of interest to them. This will in turn lead them to falling in love with an author, a story, a topic, a character and ultimately the love of reading. It is my dream to be able to provide them with literature that is to their liking but also new material to open the pathway to enlightenment. Please help me with my students' journey to becoming lifelong readers!
