My Students
Science has the ability to excite and amaze students. When students are engaged in a hands-on activity, they are learning without even realizing it! A typical day in my classroom involves students learning science while working together to solve problems.
I teach in an urban, magnet, Title I school with a diverse culturalpopulation.
All students at my school receive free breakfast and lunch. Despite life's challenges, my students exhibit a pride and passion for achievement. They are a resilient bunch who are hardworking and curious. Many of my students express their love for science class so I seek to maintain a classroom that provides unique STEM opportunities.
My Project
For students, one of the best parts of chemistry class is the laboratory experiments. I am requesting Bunsen burner tubing for my students to use with their Bunsen burners during our laboratory experiments. The hands-on experiments allow the students to see the concepts we are studying right in front of them. Many of these experiments involve heating through Bunsen burner flames, and without the experiments the students would be missing out on a vital kinesthetic aspect of the course.
The bunsen burner tubing will ensure that students have safe equipment and can continue to investigate their chemistry concepts in the lab.
The tubing we have now has become too old and unsafe to use. Many of the tubes have holes or cracks and without new tubing we will not be able to complete our labs for studying light, heat, chemical reactions, and much more. We hope to be able to get the new tubing quick enough to perform our flame test lab which will allow us to observe the characteristic colors metal ions produce when vaporized in a flame.
