Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
A little background of our school and students, Sawyer Elementary is a Chicago Public School and our students are predominantly Latino. Moreover, we have over 95% of our students come from low-income families. Our school began a school-wide initiative at the beginning of the year to increase positive behavior in our students and promote a positive school climate. The initiative was the Mustang Moolah store (named after our school mascot) wherein we created a school store that has fun items for students to purchase using their “Mustang Moolah”, which is faux money that is given by staff to students for demonstrating positive behavior, such as being kind, respectful, prepared, etc. The store has been a huge success, and our students love purchasing items every month using their well-deserved Mustang Moolah.

We were able to stock the store using funds from a school dance that we hosted in the beginning of the year; however, our funds are running low as well as our store inventory. We would love to continue keeping the store open, but we need some help from a gracious donor to purchase some hot ticket items for our students, such as sports equipment, Pokémon cards, and plush toys.
The store brings such joy to our student community, and we would love to continue this initiative for our students so that they continue to be excited about their school community and encourage them to be an exemplary student citizen.
